Description
In 1829, a group of Athens investors, William Dearing, John Nesbit, and Augustin Clayton established the Athens Manufacturing Company in Whitehall. In 1833, the same investors built a mill called the Athens Factory on the North Oconee River in the city of Athens. In 1839, the Whitehall mill was incorporated as the Georgia Manufacturing Company.
