Description
Augustin Smith Clayton graduated from the University of Georgia in 1804 and founded the Demosthenian Literary Society. He served as treasurer of the Senatus Academicus in 1808 and later as secretary. He served in the Georgia House of Representative in 1810 to 1812, the Georgia Senate in 1826 to 1827, and practiced law. Clayton enslaved a number of people who worked on his lands.
